Today in History: The Spice Girls Score a #1 Hit

20 years ago, The Spice Girls broke onto the charts and into our hearts with their first single, “Wannabe”.
Their debut hit stayed on top of the UK charts for seven weeks, garnering them a double-platinum plaque from the British Phonographic Industry. By the end of 1996, “Wannabe” topped the charts in 22 countries.
The “sisters-before-misters” anthem went on to premiere in the United States in January 1997, where it spent four weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Top 100. “Wannabe” became the single best-selling record by a female group by the end of 1997, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.
