Today in History: Coldplay Tops the UK Charts
On July 16, 2000, Coldplay went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut release “Parachutes.”
Coldplay pushed Eminem's 'Marshall Mathers LP' out of the #1 spot, largely thanks to hit singles “Shiver”' “Yellow,” “Trouble,” and “Don't Panic.”
The album sold over 2.5 million units in the United Kingdom and ranks 19th on the country's list of 20 biggest-selling albums of the 21st century.
“Parachutes.” was certified 2x Platinum in the U.S., 2x Platinum in Canada, 3x Platinum in Australia and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002.
