Today in History: The First Tibetan Freedom Concert
On June 15, 1996, the first Tibetan Freedom Concert was held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
The two-day event featured the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, The Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, De La Soul and more.
About 100,000 people attended the two-day concert and raised over $800,000 for the Milarepa Fund, an American non-profit organization that promotes awareness of the Tibetan independence movement.
