Today in History: David Bowie Plays West Berlin

On June 9, 1987, David Bowie played a concert in West Berlin in front of the Reichstag building singing for both West and East Germans at a time when they were still forcibly divided. Bowie’s connection with Berlin is well-chronicled, as Bowie spent a few years in the late-1970s sharing a Berlin flat with Iggy Pop.
During the show, the speakers were pointed towards the nearby Berlin Wall where thousands of young East Berliners stood and listened. Two years later the Berlin Wall finally fell and the country became united again. Watch David Bowie's performance of "Heroes" below:
