This really was a special night for Pigeons and their flock as headlining The Cap really is a big deal and selling it out weeks ahead of time is a great accomplishment. You could tell that they knew it and there was no letdown in the performance.
The decision to have Mihali of Twiddle open for them was good both for business (as he brings a lot of his band’s fans) and music since the two bands have been tight for years and collaborate well. In this case it meant a guest spot by Pigeons bassist Ben playing a bunch of slide whistles with Mihali and a sit-in by Mihali during Pigeons first set. For fans of Mihali, he debuted two more new songs as he approaches the release of a solo album.
A little after 9:30pm PPPP took over the stage for two funky sets full of craziness in a way only they can do it. They played a good representation of their music and a couple fun covers including a squirrelly version of the Grateful Dead’s Eyes of the World to honor The Cap and a throwback to 2017’s DisNYE show with Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas. The latter was mixed in the middle of fan favorite Schwanthem to close out the show. I’ve seen Pigeons a number of other times but this was a next level show and certainly a next step as they rise up the jam ranks.
